Learn to Let Go

As a kid I used to have this little stuffed mouse which I cuddled with at night. And I know many kids have their favourite blanket or toy they just never want to let go off. Probably even you had something that you always clinged onto when you were little - we all did! I guess that as we grow older, there are still many things we never wanna let go off. Obviously, it's not a stuffed toy or a blanket but something more emotionally attached. Moms and dads usually feel this when their kids go away to university - they feel a part of them has left the house. Or maybe you are in a relationship that isn't going anywhere and you don't see a future in it and you need to let go but you are afraid at the same time. Afraid to take that fall...

Letting go off anything really attached to us is not at all easy. Not only is it scary but plays serious mind games as well. As I was pondering over this, I thought letting go of something means we are sooner or later going to find something new to hold onto. And this time, it may be worth holding on to it! If things seem vague and uncertain - pray about it and seek god's guidance in how things should move forward. Maybe there is no moving forward and you have to cut the rope here. If you've had a troubled past that lingers in your memory to date and feel its impossible to move on - Let go! Hmmm, I know - easier said than done. But think of it this way - if you are still living in your past, you cannot fully live in the present!

I think there are different types of letting go. It can be letting go of your past, letting go of someone you love, letting go of an addiction - it can be anything. But it remains as a stumbling block in your move forward - so it needs to go. Things never turn out in life the way we plan it, so if it doesn't go according to our plan - it doesn't mean we give up and cling onto our past. Joseph Campbell once said "We must be intelligent to let go off the life we have planned so as to accept the life that is waiting for us"

So if you feel you are stuck in one place, holding onto something with no value, no purpose, no future - LET GO! And continue moving forward, taking a step at a time in the path God has prepared for you. Certainly, there will be no disappointment when you finish that walk.

Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (Philipians 3 vs 13-14)
