You Decide - Whom Do You Fear?

Have you heard many Christian families use the term "God Fearing"? Mary is such a God Fearing lady or The Wilsons are a great God Fearing family. So, what does it mean to "Fear" God? Should we be afraid? Why such harsh terminology?

In today's world man easily fears the power of leadership, the power of money, materialistic cravings, the need to be socially acceptable and so on. From all this, its rather evident majority of the world have a fear of each other. But seldom do they realize this.

"Do not be wise in your own eyes, fear the Lord and shun evil"
Proverbs 3:7

To fear God may not sound right literally and growing up I used to find it rather strange we were termed as "God Fearing" people. If we love God and he loves us, whats to fear in that? Obviously I had it all wrong. As I've grown spiritually and continue learning from His word, I've come to understand this a lot better now.

Today, I fear God because I know he hold my life in his hands. Anything I do or say, I am accountable to Him. Reading through scripture clearly states the same. The wrath of God is seen on those who do not fear him (Exodus 9:29-31) . And Jesus warns us not to fear the world but fear God who controls the soul...

"And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body"
Matthew 10:28

People live their lives to please one another. To be accepted and not condemned. In the process, they lose the value of themselves, being someone they aren't and start worshiping money, materials of this world and of course acceptance and likes from everyone else. Forgetting the creator. In other words, they fear the world; so they work towards being accepted by the world. What they don't realize is this "fear" doesn't open up the greatest treasure of all.

"The fear of the Lord is the key to his treasure"
Isaiah 33:6

Fearing God is drawn out of love. Years ago my uncle wrote in my autograph/slam book the famous verse from Proverbs 1:7. " The fear of the Lord, is the beginning of wisdom". I used to ponder about that but today it has meaning. I fear God in a way that I know how to live my life. He's set standards and bars, I need to meet his expectations, I have a relationship with this God so great. I live by the guidance of His spirit in me. I've learnt not to be controlled by the world but live out with a Christ like character.

All this because I fear God for the love which was shed for me on that cross.

My prayer: Is for the world to know and FEAR the love of this one true God.

"There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear"
1 John 4:18

Amen.
